Day 27
September 27
Human evil placed Jesus on the cross, but through it God deliberately accomplished His saving purpose for sinners.
If we saw only the surface of the crucifixion, we would call it a tragic collision of corrupt power, religious envy, public fear, betrayal, cowardice, and mob violence.
Judas sold a friend. Leaders protected their influence. Pilate protected his position. Soldiers carried out a brutal sentence. A crowd chose another prisoner. Disciples fled. The innocent Jesus was mocked, beaten, and nailed to Roman wood.
The cross reveals what human beings do when God comes close enough to threaten our control. Left to ourselves, we reject His rule.
Yet Scripture insists that the cross was not an accident and Jesus was not a helpless victim. Long before Calvary, the prophet Isaiah described a servant who would be rejected, bear sin, suffer in the place of others, and afterward see life. Jesus repeatedly told His disciples that He would be killed and rise again. He said no one ultimately took His life from Him; He laid it down willingly.
At Pentecost, Peter spoke about these two truths together; that wicked people crucified Jesus, and He was delivered according to God's definite plan. Human actors were morally responsible. God was sovereignly accomplishing redemption through, not approving, their evil.
This protects us from a terrible distortion. The cross is not a reason to blame one ethnic people. Jews and Gentiles were both involved, and the deeper biblical verdict includes every one of us: Christ suffered for human sin. Our rebellion made His saving death necessary.
Why was the cross necessary at all? Could God not simply announce forgiveness?
But forgiveness is not pretending evil never happened. If someone destroys a life and a judge shrugs, we do not call that mercy; we call it injustice. God is perfectly loving and perfectly just. He neither delights in condemnation nor treats evil as harmless.
At the cross, God's holy love acted. The Son willingly stood in the place of sinners and bore our sins. He gave His life as a ransom. The Father did not coerce an unwilling Son, and the Son did not persuade a reluctant Father to love us. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit acted in harmony to accomplish salvation.
The cross therefore tells the truth about us and about God.
It tells the truth about us: sin is so grave that reconciliation required the death of Christ. Our deepest problem is not lack of self-esteem, opportunity, education, money, or public reform, important as those needs may be. We are alienated from God and cannot remove our own guilt.
It tells the truth about God: His love is not sentimental, it is real! In Christ, God gave Himself for His enemies. And Jesus did not remain dead. God raised Him on the third day, vindicating Him as Messiah and Lord. The resurrection turns the apparent defeat of the cross into the public victory of God. Sin was borne, death was invaded, and the powers of evil were disarmed.
But this does not mean everyone is automatically reconciled regardless of response. A gift can be truly offered and still refused. The Bible calls us to repent and believe - to abandon our rebellion and entrust ourselves to the crucified and risen King.
Some people stand far from the cross because they believe they are too guilty. Others stand far because they believe they are not guilty enough to need it. Both must come! The cross has no flattering word for the proud and no hopeless word for the repentant.
Do not wear the cross as a jewellery, admire it as art, or discuss it only as history. The cross demands a verdict! Either Jesus died needlessly, or your need is greater than you have admitted and His love is greater than you have imagined.
The cross was not an accident. It was God's rescue planned in eternity, accomplished in history, and offered to you now. Will you receive it?
Have you admired the cross without entrusting yourself to the One who died there? This is your opportunity to do so.
Stop defending yourself and stop assuming you are beyond mercy. Confess that Christ's death was necessary for you. Believe that He willingly bore sin and that God raised Him from the dead. Turn from rebellion and receive reconciliation with God through Jesus.
