Day 26

September 26

THE THIRST BENEATH EVERY THIRST

Created things cannot carry the weight of our deepest hope; Jesus gives living water and restores us to the God for whom we thirst.

Today's Message for You

We are all somewhat thirsty. I mean, that’s a by-product of being human. And when I mean thirst here I don’t simply mean ‘water’. Our human essences long for its needs to be met, what I would call its ‘thirsts’. The need for a relationship, recognition, money, sexual fulfilment, influence, security, escape, or one more achievement. We may genuinely desire those things, but beneath them often lies a deeper demand: Make me whole. Tell me who I am. Keep me from being empty. Give me a reason to live.

But for many of us, especially in the modern era, they have, in some way, become idols, mini-gods. Wait, “gods”? You see, an idol is not only a carved object in a shrine. It is anything we trust, love, fear, or obey as though it were ultimate. It may be a career, family, nation, ministry, body, romance, reputation, ideology, or dream. The heart can turn even a good gift into a functional saviour.

The prophet Jeremiah in the Bible described God's people as abandoning a fountain of living water and digging broken cisterns that could hold no water. The image is tragic. They did not just choose one adequate source over another. They left the source and worked hard to build containers that leaked.

This explains a common human experience: we receive what we thought would satisfy us, enjoy it for a time, and then discover the thirst has survived. The promotion becomes normal. Approval needs renewal. Pleasure demands repetition. Control discovers another threat. The cistern leaks.

Jesus once sat beside a well and spoke with a Samaritan woman. She carried several layers of social distance and a complicated relational history. Jesus knew the truth without using it to humiliate her. He moved the conversation beneath ordinary water and offered living water that would become a spring of eternal life.

He was not offering a spiritual technique for feeling fulfilled. He was offering Himself and the life of God through the Holy Spirit.

The woman tried to move briefly into religious debate. We often do the same. Abstract questions can keep truth away from the heart.

Our deepest thirst is not for improved circumstances. It is for the God we have left. We were made to receive life from Him, know His love, live in His truth, and reflect His glory. Sin turns desire inward and sends us from cistern to cistern. But Jesus says, if you drink from the ‘living water’, you will not thirst again. This ‘living water’ is the life of God.

How can thirsty rebels return to the fountain?

Jesus would later cry, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink." Yet the One offering water would Himself say from the cross, "I thirst." There He entered the desolation our sin deserves and bore our guilt. He died, was buried, and rose again. The risen Christ pours out the Holy Spirit and gives eternal life to those who come.

Coming to Him does not mean every legitimate desire disappears. As humans we’ll still desire friendship, meaningful work, marriage, justice, healing, and daily bread. The change is that these gifts no longer have to become God. We can receive them gratefully, grieve their absence honestly, and surrender them without losing the centre of life.

Some idols are painful to release because they have become survival strategies. Do not expect willpower to empty the shrine. Bring the underlying fear and longing to Christ. Let a faithful community help you identify what your choices reveal about your functional trust.

Jesus does not say, "Stop thirsting." He says, "Come to Me." The Gospel is not the death of desire but its rescue from false gods and its return to the true one. Created things cannot carry the weight of our deepest hope; Jesus gives living water and restores us to the God for whom we thirst.

You have spent enough time drinking what cannot hold life. The fountain is not hiding. The Spirit and the bride say, "Come."

What do you believe must happen before your life can be whole?

Which good gift have you required to function as your identity or saviour?

What fear appears when you imagine surrendering that thing to Jesus?

Name the broken cistern honestly. Turn from the idol and from the sin used to serve it. Trust Jesus, who died and rose to bring you to God, and ask for the living water of the Holy Spirit.
