Day 28

September 28

JESUS IS NOT ONE OPTION AMONG MANY

Jesus is the unique Son, Saviour, and mediator because He alone reveals the Father, bears sin, rises from death, and brings us to God.

Today's Message for You

In a world of many religions and sincere beliefs, saying that Jesus is the only way to God can sound arrogant. I mean, do Christians really know what that means? Do they really understand the concern? And, of course, religious claims have sometimes been presented with pride, coercion, contempt, or violence, attitudes that contradict the way of Jesus. Okay, let’s talk.

Before we decide whether the claim is arrogant, we must first understand what is actually being claimed.

Christianity does not begin with the belief that Christians are better than everyone else, that one culture has found God while the rest of humanity has failed, or that Christians possess some superior wisdom by which they have climbed their way to heaven.

It begins somewhere far deeper. It says that all of us are lost.

Beneath our religions, philosophies, achievements, and attempts to become good people lies a separation we cannot repair. We have not simply made mistakes. We have sinned against the God who gave us life. We have wanted His gifts without His rule, His world without His presence, and life on our own terms. Even the good we do cannot undo the evil we have done. A lifetime of sincerity cannot erase guilt, and no amount of religion can make a dead heart alive.

This is why Jesus did not come simply to offer humanity another set of teachings.

If ignorance were our deepest problem, perhaps a teacher would have been enough. If indiscipline were the problem, perhaps we needed a better moral example. If all roads already led to God, then there would have been no reason for the Son of God to enter our world, bear our grief, submit Himself to shame, and die beneath the judgment our sins deserved.

The cross only makes sense if there was no other way.

Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.” Yet the cup did not pass. He was betrayed, condemned, beaten, stripped, and nailed to a cross. If humanity could have been reconciled to God through sincerity, morality, religion, or another path, then what happened at Calvary was not an act of love. It was an unnecessary death.

But there was no other way.

On that cross, Jesus was not dying because He had failed. He had no sin of His own for which to answer. He was standing where we should have stood. The judgment was ours. The shame was ours. The separation was ours. Yet He took it upon Himself.

This is what makes the claim that Jesus is the only way so different from human pride. We are not standing above the world announcing that we found the way because we were wiser than everyone else. We are standing among the guilty, pointing to the One who came to save us when none of us could save ourselves.

The ground at the foot of the cross leaves no room for boasting.

The religious person must come there. The irreligious person must come there. The person whose life is admired and the person whose past is known must come the same way. No tribe, nation, education, reputation, sacrifice, or record of good deeds can take the place of Christ. Before the holiness of God, every mouth is stopped, and every one of us stands in need of mercy.

This is why Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

This means we cannot reduce Jesus to a prophet, admire Him as a teacher, or place Him respectfully beside other religious figures while rejecting what He said about Himself. A Jesus who is only one option among many is not the Jesus who walked out of the grave. If He is who He claimed to be, then He cannot occupy one corner of our lives. He is Lord, and every one of us must answer to Him.

Still, His invitation is not restricted to one group of people.

Jesus is the only Saviour, but He is not the Saviour of only one race, nation, class, or kind of person. He calls the religious and the sceptical, the respected and the ashamed, those who think they are close to God and those who know they are far away. No past is too stained for His blood to cleanse. No life is too broken for Him to redeem. Whoever comes to Him in repentance and faith will not be cast out.

Perhaps Christians have represented Him badly. Some have spoken of truth without love, defended His name while contradicting His character, or used religion as a means of power. That is grievous, but their failure does not change who Jesus is. Do not allow the hypocrisy of people who claimed His name to keep you from looking at Christ Himself.

Look at the cross.

There, God’s judgment against sin and His love for sinners meet. There, human pride is silenced. There, the guilty are offered pardon.

The question, then, is not whether Christianity sounds exclusive. The deeper question is whether Jesus truly died and rose again, and what His death reveals about our condition. Because if another way could have brought us home, the cross was unnecessary. But if the cross was necessary, then refusing Christ is not the humble acceptance of another path. It is the rejection of the only rescue God has provided.

Jesus is not one religious option among many.

He is the Son of God who entered our ruin, bore our judgment, conquered the grave, and now offers life to anyone who will come.

The way has been opened, but you must enter through Him.

Have the failures of Christians kept you from examining Christ Himself?

What do you believe Jesus meant by His claims about His identity and authority?

Are your remaining questions honest obstacles, or shields against surrender?

Do not place Jesus on a shelf beside other helpful voices. Turn from sin and self-rule. Trust the unique Son who died and rose to reconcile sinners to God. Confess Him as your Saviour and Lord.
