Day 24
September 24
The debt of sin demanded a payment we could never make, so Jesus took our place, paid it in full, and opened the way for us to return to God.
Every one of us knows what it means to owe a debt. When we owe money, we understand that sooner or later, it must be paid. We may try to delay it, negotiate it, or find someone to help us, but eventually, the debt has to be settled.
The Bible tells us that humanity has a far greater debt, one that money can never pay and human effort can never erase. It is the debt of sin.
Sin has separated us from God. The Bible says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). No matter how good, successful, religious, educated, or respected we may be, none of us can honestly claim that we have lived perfectly before a holy God.
Perhaps you have tried to be a good person. Perhaps you have helped others, given generously, gone to church, prayed, or tried to turn your life around. These things may be good, but they cannot remove the guilt of sin or make us righteous before God. We cannot save ourselves.
That is why the Gospel is such good news.
God did not leave us hopeless in our sin. He loved us so deeply that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to do for us what we could never do for ourselves.
Jesus lived a sinless life, yet He willingly went to the cross and took our place. He bore the punishment that our sins deserved. He shed His blood so that we could receive forgiveness. He paid the debt that we could never pay.
The Bible says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Notice those words: “while we were yet sinners.”
Jesus did not wait for us to become perfect before He loved us. He did not wait until we had cleaned up our lives. He loved us in our brokenness. He came for us when we were lost.
And when Jesus died on the cross, He declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30).
The work of redemption was accomplished. The price had been paid.
The Gospel is the good news of what Jesus Christ accomplished for us more than two thousand years ago, a finished work that is still powerful, relevant, and available to us today. That is why we invite you to put your faith in Him and receive the salvation He freely offers.
The world has changed. Generations have come and gone. Our lives may look very different from those who lived in biblical times, but our greatest need has not changed. We still need forgiveness. We still need reconciliation with God. We still need salvation from sin. And Jesus Christ is still the answer.
The message of the cross is therefore not simply a story from the past. It is God’s answer to the deepest need of every human heart today. His death still speaks forgiveness. His resurrection still offers hope. His grace is still available. His power to transform lives is still real.
But we must respond to His invitation.
The Bible calls us to repent, which means turning away from our sin and turning toward God, and to place our faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation is not something we can earn through good works. It is God’s gift of grace, received through faith in Jesus.
Maybe you have been running from God. Maybe you have convinced yourself that you are too far gone. Maybe there are things in your past that you are ashamed of and believe God could never forgive.
But the cross tells a different story. There is forgiveness for you. There is mercy for you. There is hope for you. There is a new beginning for you.
Your past does not have to determine your future. Your failures do not have to have the final word. The shame you carry does not have to define who you are. Jesus can forgive you. Jesus can restore you. Jesus can make you new.
He is not asking you to fix yourself before coming to Him. He is asking you to come to Him in faith.
If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you can do that today. Talk to Him honestly. Confess your sin. Ask Him for forgiveness. Put your trust in His death and resurrection. Surrender your life to Him and receive Him as your Saviour and Lord. You do not need to have every question answered before you come. You do not need to understand everything before you come.
Come to Jesus. The One who paid your debt is calling you.
The cross is God’s declaration that you are deeply loved, and the empty tomb is God’s declaration that Jesus is alive. The debt has been paid. The way to God has been opened. And the invitation is still being extended: Come to Jesus. Come home. Receive His grace. Receive His forgiveness. Receive His life.
What are you trusting to make you right with God: your good deeds, religious activity, personal improvement, or the finished work of Jesus Christ?
The debt has been paid. Will you receive what Christ has done for you?
You cannot repay the debt of sin by becoming a better person. But you do not have to carry a debt that Jesus has already paid. Turn from your sin and place your faith in His death and resurrection. Stop trying to save yourself and receive the mercy He freely offers.
