Day 23
September 23
“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”
ACTS 17:30–31
It is possible to renovate a house whose foundation is failing. Fresh paint covers the cracks. New furniture changes the atmosphere. Visitors may admire the improvement. But beneath the visible work, the central problem remains.
Much of what we call personal change is renovation. We adjust habits, relocate, enter a relationship, begin a new year, read better books, or become more disciplined. Some changes are wise and valuable. None can create spiritual life. A perfect example is Nicodemus in the scriptures. Nicodemus was not careless about God. He was disciplined, respected, educated in Scripture, and recognised as a teacher of Israel. If anyone could present a strong religious record, he could.
Yet when he came to Jesus, Christ did not congratulate him for being close to the kingdom or say "You need to become a better version of yourself.". No, He told him, "You must be born again."
The Bible's diagnosis is more serious than low motivation. By nature, we are not spiritually neutral people waiting for enough information. We are alienated from God, resistant to His rule, and unable to produce the life He requires from the resources of the old heart.
This does not mean every person is as cruel as possible or incapable of social good. It means sin reaches the centre from which we think, desire, choose, and love. Even our virtues can be recruited by pride. A heart turned away from God can use morality to congratulate itself and religion to avoid surrender.
Centuries before Jesus spoke with Nicodemus, God promised through Ezekiel that He would cleanse His people, remove the heart of stone, give a new heart, and put His Spirit within them. The new birth is that promised act of divine mercy.
Only God can do it. You did not cause your first birth, and you cannot manufacture the second. Emotion cannot create it. Repeating a prayer mechanically cannot create it. Water baptism signifies union with Christ and belongs to obedient discipleship, but the outward act cannot substitute for the Spirit's inward work.
Does that leave us passive and hopeless? No. The same Jesus who says we must be born again tells us why the Son of Man would be lifted up: so that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life. God's sovereign work does not cancel the invitation; it makes the invitation hopeful. Come to Christ, and ask for the mercy you cannot produce.
Jesus lived without sin, died bearing the sins of others, and rose bodily from the grave. When a sinner turns to Him in repentance and faith, God forgives, unites that person to the risen Christ, and gives the Holy Spirit. Salvation is not only a changed legal standing, though it includes full justification. It is also a new beginning of life.
What does this new life look like?
Not instant maturity. A newborn is truly alive but not fully grown. Christians may stumble, require correction, fight old patterns, and grow slowly. The evidence of life is not flawless performance but a new direction: a new relationship to Jesus, a new grief over sin, a new hunger for truth, a new desire to obey, a new love for God's people, and a new willingness to return when convicted.
Beware two errors. The first is claiming new birth while making peace with sin. Grace changes what we defend. The second is denying God's work because growth is incomplete. Grace also changes where we run when we fail. The old life hides from God; the new life learns to confess and come back into the light.
You may have tried many times to change and now distrust every promise of a new beginning. The Gospel is not about placing confidence in your willpower. It directs you to the crucified and risen Christ and the life-giving Spirit.
You do not need a spiritual coat of paint. You need life from above. And what God commands, He is able to give.
Have you confused outward improvement with inward spiritual life?
Are you relying on willpower to produce what only the Holy Spirit can give?
Maybe it’s time you became ‘born again’.
Come to Jesus without pretending you can remake yourself. Turn from sin, believe in His death and resurrection, and ask God to cleanse you and give you new life by the Holy Spirit. Romans 10:9-10: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
