Day 10
September 10
With Heaven in Sight, but Never Stepping In…
“While it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.””
Hebrews 3:15
I’ve heard of people who said they would give their lives to Christ when things were good, after they had enjoyed life, after they had done the things they wanted to do. I’ve even had a friend postpone her salvation until after she finished crying. She cried, slept, and by the time she woke up, something had changed. The urgency was gone, and suddenly she did not want to anymore.
That has always remained with me because sometimes the thing separating someone from Christ is not that they have completely rejected Him. Sometimes it is simply, “Later.” Later, when I am ready. Later, after this relationship. Later, after I have enjoyed life. Later, after I have stopped this habit. Later, when I become the kind of person I think God would accept.
But the frightening thing about “later” is that none of us has been promised it. I’ve heard of people who said “later,” not knowing that it was their final chance.
There is something deeply troubling about being almost persuaded. To hear enough to know. To feel conviction strongly enough to consider surrender. To come close enough to the door to see what lies beyond it, and still turn around because there is something behind you that you are not yet willing to leave. Agrippa once said to Paul, “Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian” (Acts 26:28).
Almost…!
It is one of the saddest words when eternity is involved, because almost saved is still lost!
But there is another kind of “almost” that may be even harder to recognise. A person can know Christian language, enjoy Christian worship, respect Christian morality, attend gatherings, and even speak about Jesus without ever personally entrusting himself or herself to Him. Familiarity can create a dangerous illusion: because the Gospel surrounds us, we assume it has saved us. You can be born into a Christian family, know when to stand during worship, know the songs, know how Christians speak, and still not personally know Christ.
And this is where we have to be careful not to confuse what Christianity actually means.
A Christian is not simply someone who attends church, comes from a Christian home, believes God exists, tries to be a good person, or once had an emotional religious experience. But neither is a Christian someone who has somehow reached sinless perfection. A Christian is someone who has come to Christ in repentance and faith, trusting not in himself but in what Jesus has done, receiving Him as Saviour and Lord, and beginning a new life by the Spirit of God.
That new life may stumble. It may struggle. It may have questions. But its direction has changed.
There are many foundations that look solid until a storm arrives. A Christian family can teach us, pray for us, and bless us, but no one inherits reconciliation with God. Salvation is personal, and each of us will stand before God to give an account of our own lives. Saving faith receives the crucified and risen Christ as personal Saviour and Lord.
For some, you may need to ask yourself this question: Is your confidence in Christ, or in the fact that you grew up in a Christian environment?
And perhaps for someone reading this, the issue is simpler. You already know you have never surrendered to Him. You have come close before, maybe very close. You have felt the pull and said, “Later.”
But every time we say “later,” we are still deciding what to do with Christ today.
If the answer exposes you, exposure is mercy. The door of grace is still open. Jesus is not inviting almost-perfect people to become slightly better. He is calling the dead to life and the lost to come home.
Do not settle for being almost persuaded, almost surrendered, almost alive. A bridge that reaches almost to the other side cannot carry you home.
Christ has crossed the distance sinners could not cross. Don’t postpone your salvation. Come to Christ now, not later. As Scripture says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…” (Hebrews 3:15).
Come entirely to Him.
Examine your foundation without making your performance your saviour. If you have trusted a label or moment instead of Christ, confess it. Turn from self-rule and entrust yourself now to the One who died and rose again. Then begin walking with Him in Scripture, prayer, obedience, baptism, and a faithful church.
